Today we looked at the verbs to make and to do (which both translate to fazer in Portuguese). Here are the rules for knowing when to use each verb along with some phrases commonly used with "make" and "do":
Make:
*use when referring to building, constructing or creating something that you can touch.
Key phrases:
- make money
- make plans
- make decisions
- make noise
- make a mistake
- make an excuse
- make a call
- make an exception
- make and effort
Do:
*use when referring to activities or general ideas thats are abstract.
Key phrases:
- do your best
- do well
- do poorly
- do right
- do harm
- do a favor
- do business
After learning the rules, we did an activity where students used a worksheet to determine who does or makes certain things in their household, choosing which verbs corresponds to the activity:
In your house, who does/makes ... ?
(makes) the bed
(does) the cooking
(makes) the most money
(does) the dishes
(makes) most of the decisions
(does) the ironing
(makes) the most mess
(does) the decorating
