Music Bible Study, (01/07)

Today we had restarted our Music Bible Study. The song we listened to and discussed was "I'm With You (Ruth and Naomi)" by Nichole Nordeman and Amy Grant. One of my favorites from the album "Music Inspired by the Story" (http://www.thestorycd.com/).

We read Ruth 1:3-18 to get a taste of the story of Ruth and Naomi. Naomi suffered a great deal as her husband and two sons died and she was left alone with her two daughters-in-law. Naomi urged them to leave her and start new lives. One of them left, but the other, Ruth, clung to here (she refused to leave). One of the most touching lines of the story is in Ruth 1:16-17 where Ruth says to Naomi "Don't urge me to leave your to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried." Eliane did a beautiful job of translating this into Portuguese!

We learned new vocabulary from the text, and then each student took turns reading. They did a great job! After that we learned the new vocabulary in the song and practiced tough pronunciations. Finally we listened to the song 2 times so that students could fill in the blanks of the lyrics in their handouts. They did an excellent job and read through the song to help each other fill in any blanks that their peers missed. At the end of class we had a discussion about Ruth and Naomi. I asked them if they had ever experience a situation similar to them, or if they knew someone who had. Jennifer shared a beautiful story about how her mom and her mom's friends came alongside a friend of theirs when she was going through a lot of health difficulties, and how in the end this friend overcame them and was healed. We also discussed how we have the opportunity to be like Ruth in our community by reaching out to the people that are alone like Naomi was.We have the opportunity to go visit the elderly at Cantinho do Vovo and orphans at Casa Ana Caroline. I proposed the idea of doing this every week with the students, and they liked the idea a lot. Now I'm going to be in contact with the directors of the programs at these two places and find out when would be a good time to make weekly visits. I look forward to gathering more students to do this and I hope that it is a group that continues and grows even after Frankie and I leave in November.

Saulo, Jennifer, Eliane, and Gloria (visitor from PARFOR) doing the listening activity. Filling in the blanks.

 Jennifer and Eliane reading aloud.

Vocabulary from the song and Bible passage (Ruth 1:3-18 NIV)
